“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”
― Clare Boothe Luce
The wife of the vice president, FRN, first caught my eye at the campaign train that stopped somewhere in the southwest when she along with Aisha Buhari, wife of the president made their debut public appearances.
The bundled broom she held in her right hand which represents the symbol of her husband’s political party did little to interrupt the aura of grace that surrounded her.
Her style is generally simple; whether she’s putting on Ankara skirt and blouse, an English morning dress with a fascinator or white lace traditional attire for the swearing-in ceremony, her finesse always comes through.
And this is exactly what elegance is about; when you can simply and effortlessly exude exquisiteness without being ostentatious.
She may not make news headlines for wearing a $50,000 Cartier Baignoire wrist watch like just another accessory but I wager her possessions are not a dime, a dozen.
Apart from her accessories, her composure and poise are other admirable qualities that distinguish her from a crowd of uniformed campaigners.
I remember little of Maryam Babangida, who is generally credited for introducing sophistication to the presidency but I think one better than her is here.
It appears that if you are petite and pretty, have an Awolowo bloodline plus a certain je ne sais quoi, you may well be on your way to being the nonesuch of unaffected elegance.
